Roundup for 31Dec2006

Happy New Year everyone!

  • We added a Special Set of tracks to commemorate the concerts we attended this year.

  • Later, we will update the station with new sets and more commentary. The list is here though the songs aren't yet playing on the station.

  • Again, I hope to update the radio station as soon as the girls are done with dessert. The tracks are all uploaded, I'm just waiting for them to be ready to talk. The listing will be here when it is ready.

  • While Bill and Ella are off seeing Trout Fishing in America and a Hog Drop, ScribbleMonster filled in as hosts of Spare the Rock. Though if I were ScribblePiggy, I would have boycotted.

  • Two last chances to listen to Ralph's World on the XMRadio Rumpus Room show....

  • Today's Music 31Dec2006

As a teaser, I'm posting the tracks that we will add later tonight after we open gifts but before we toast in the New Year.

  • Special Set 31Dec2006

We've added one new, special set of tracks to commemorate the concerts we've attended this year. The girls didn't get to see Ralph Covert - Adult Show or Justin Roberts this year, but I did on my "getaway" trip to Chicago.... They did see Justin perform in Cleveland in 2005, and hopefully we will get to see him perform in 2007!

In order to stay within Live365's rules, I had to remove Farmer Jason, Buck Howdy, and Milkshake from the other sets, so the commentary may be a little confusing, but, as ScribbleMonster says, "Oh Well!"

As always, our broadcast is located at Live365.

    Roundup for 30Dec2006

  • Again, I hope to update the radio station as soon as the girls are done with dessert. The tracks are all uploaded, I'm just waiting for them to be ready to talk. The listing will be here when it is ready.

  • TV for Tots has posted a list of all the artists on Jack's Big Music Show.
  • Stefan at Zooglobble has a review of Music For Tots  from Little Miss Ann.

  • Momma Daria at Momma Daria's Kid's Music Review has a post about "Momma Daria Kid's Music Awards".
  • Along those lines, Ralph's World will be on the XMRadio Rumpus Room show this weekend. We listened today and enjoyed the show. We'll tune into at least on of the three airings tomorrow...

  • Eric at Cool Tunes for Kids writes about Kids Make the Darnedest Audience . I really enjoyed reading it and felt he was spot-on with many of his observations and theories. One point that I think he could add is that often at a kids' concert (maybe not in schools so much) is that it is not so much a kids' concert as a family concert...thus connecting with the parents is probably quite important as well, IMO.

  • There's still time to enter Buck Howdy's video contest!

  • Today's Music 30Dec2006

The new set of tracks is up and streaming...again, the girls were not too chatty. I think the fact that they were itching to watch "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" had something to so with the brevity of the commentary.

As always, our broadcast is located at Live365.

    Roundup for 28Dec2006

  • I've had issues updating the station today; the input volume on the mic was too low. We're still learning, but I guess that will always be the case. Read more here.

  • Tom Chapin has some big news on his website:
Tune in National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" on Friday, December 29th. They will debut a song by Tom Chapin & John Forster called "Not On The Test" It'll be coming out of a Larry Abramson story on school testing and will air at roughly 40 minutes past the hour. To find your local NPR station, and the time "Morning Edition" airs in your area, visit their website www.npr.org.

  • There is a nice interview with Trout Fishing in America in the Star-Gazette from upstate NY. I found this quote to be interesting:
But I don't think you can force them to do anything or you can destroy their love for the music.

  • Stephan at Zooglobble has posted about The Jellydots new show listing.
  • Jeffery at Out With the Kids is headed to World Cafe Live to see Gustafer YellowGold and has posted some thoughts about the upcoming show. I can't wait to read his review of the show!

    Roundup for 19Dec2006

  • Check out YAWPA (yet another Washington Post article) on kids' music. Quotes from Kenny Curtis and more. Though I found their list of "household name kids' artists" to be a bit strange.

  • Yosi at Indie Kids Rock has another fun interview. Aren't those kids in the photo adorable? Well, of course I think so, since they are my girls .... and the interview is with us here at Gooney Bird Kids.

  • Stefan at Zooglobble gives a glimpse at his top 46-50 top songs. He says "Here we go ..." and if you look at the titles, he really means it!
  • Uncle Rock points us to an article in the Poughkeepsie Journal that features him, Dogs on Fleas and some others. Very nice!
  • Alright already, I will start learning to play the uke. If you don't want to be bitten by the bug, don't read the Houston Chronicle article that says, among other things "The Guinness Book of World Records once cited the ukulele as the world's easiest instrument to learn, a point Zanes echoes." (Zanes, as in the ubiquitous DZ who is selling very nice ukes, one I didn't buy and am now jealous of those, who shall remain nameless -- since I always mispell their names, did buy.)

  • From Ralph Covert's blog:
Many of you also know Ralph's adult rock'n'roll with his band, The Bad Examples. Well, to our surprise and honor, they've been nominated for Best Rock Album for the 26th Annual Chicago Music Awards. The album is the kid-friendly compilation "Good Examples Of Bad Examples" which came out towards the end of last year.

You can place your vote by filling out a form at http://www.chicagomusicawards.com/sub302.htm.

  • Over at XMKids there are two fabulous Rumpus Room Concerts coming up: Trout Fishing in America this weekend (we love Merry Fishes here!) and Ralph's World on New Years' Eve (I think). Almost makes us wish Santa would get us a subscription to XMRadio...

  • There's a fun video from Laughing Pizza on YouTube.
  • Uncle Rock has a new post on the latest news.
  • Lisa Mathews of Milkshake offers her Chritmas picks over at The Lovely Mrs. Davis.
  • Elizabeth Mitchell reports in her newsletter:
my friend ida pearle, who made the beautiful cover art for "you are my little bird" is offering a limited edition print of the image from the album cover. ida also makes exquisite customized name prints, birth announcements and more. please visit idapearle.com for more information. there is still time to get one for the holidays!

    Roundup for 18Dec2006

  • There was much rejoicing in our house today when we looked at the spring concert dates for Ralph's World! Yes, there are southeast dates on there!

  • We updated the station today. Today's music includes a winter theme. Let us konw of tracks you'd like to see added to the theme.

  • A Miami Herald article entitled "Pop! goes the tot: Today's kids go for guitar hooks and global beats" has an interesting line "Kids music will make an artist rich and famous faster than just about any other genre." Hmm.
  • Accompanying Kid CD picks in this article published today. Includes Wee Hairy Beasties, Elizabeth Mitchell and more.

  • From the LA Times:
The Children's Hour: Forget those insipid lullaby reworkings of Nirvana. This is a new golden era for kids' music because indie musicians realized that they could have fun, make money and stay creative playing for their kids' friends. Smart, inventive artists including the Sippy Cups, Wee Hairy Beasties, Uncle Rock, Ralph's World, Farmer Jason, Laurie Berkner and scene grandaddy Dan Zanes are treating their juvenile audience with respect, not condescension — and making music that really rocks.

  • There's an article about children's music in the WSJ, but I don't subscribe. There's a reprint on Madeline's Toybox's blog.
  • Ginger at Joyful Woman wrote a review of Justin Robert's Meltdown.

    Roundup for 6Dec2006

7Dec2006: I mistyped in the description of Stephan's contest. It is songs, not albums.

  • Don't forget to give me your Dan Zanes suggestions! See yesterday's post.
  • Hey all, what do you know about Harry and the Potters? They are coming to Atlanta in January, but I don't know anything about them...age-appropriateness and all that.
  • Stephan at Zoogloble has some fun news. The show hasn't aired here yet, but I'll listen in later! Here's the link.
  • He also asks that you try to guess his Top 5 favortie songs. Hmmm. I don't know my own, let alone his!
  • Warren at Children's Music that Rocks has posted a review of Chucky Woodbine's Misleading.

    Roundup for 4Dec2006

Okay, a long one today. Most of the stuff, if not all, is interesting, so try to make it to the end, okay?

  • Well, after a long delay, I've finally put up the recap of our trip to see Lunch Money perform in Columbia, SC.
  • On Lunch Money's website, they have some song samples and lyrics. You can also hear more samples at CD Baby.
  • Laurie Berkner sent out informaiton about the pre-sale for her Boca Raton, FL show. I don't know that I should repost the details publicly, but if you want them, let me know. Sign up for her newsletter so you too can get presales info!
  • There's a nice article about dads and music. It fits in with camille's observation that many kindie musicians enter the scene when they have kids or become preschool teachers.
  • Here's an article about the Imagination Movers. I found the following comment, though not exactly surprising, to be interesting:
“The unfortunate part is we had stopped doing live shows for November and December because we thought we were going to be doing the pilot. That cut into our income because even with an advance, you’re talking about four guys and an office. It’s next to nothing when it gets down to us.”

  • Stephan at Zooglobble has three interesting posts that describe the review work he does and what his favorites are...An FAQ, a discussion on music for the post-toddler set, and his picks for 2006. It was interesting to hear his rationale for selecting various CDs. Our method of selection was a bit different and less sophisticated...not surprising given that our average age is 16.
  • Eric at Cool Tunes for Kids has posted his view on The Wiggles. There have been quite a few posts out there about The Wiggles because of the recent news, and I haven't read them all, but this one I did.
  • ScribbleMonster has a number of upcoming shows in IL, plus they'll be the Spare the Rock DJs on 30 Dec. Be sure to tune in...they are not to be missed. The kids in my house enjoy watching their videos and doing the fun activities on ScribbleMonster's website. Moreover, they have three fun tracks for you to listen to on their MySpace page, including our favorite "I Wish I Lived in Michigan; the album Curious Glimpse of Michigan appears to not be released yet, but I could be wrong. Correct me if I am, because I would love to buy it for my girls for Christmas.
  • Eric Herman's newsletter came out today... He's got a sale on CDs at his website and also is forming a grassroots promoting program.
  • Devon at Head, Shoulders, Kness and All That has posted about a nice YouTube video with ASL for "Down in the Glen". If I have my facts straight, my Ralphead friend Suzanne put that video togther!
  • LA Mommy wants people to share good kids' music with her.... I commented that she should have a look at Fids and Kamily but I'm sure you have other suggestions too.
  • fuse#8 wrote a post about the Fids and Kamily Awards. She likes the title "Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child", so there you go.

  • Colors Theme

We love spotting rainbows, painting with all the colors and swirling the playdoh (unfortunately, this seems to make all the PlayDoh in the house turn brown as we have not yet learned a trick for separating the colors).

As always, let us know of any that you like!

    Roundup for 3Dec2006

A short list today and no photos from Lunch Money since I spent the morning out, the afternoon in ancient Rome watching gladiator fights and the evening updating the station...

  • We've updated the station playlist today to include a Colors theme and new music from Ginger Hendrix!

  • Here's an article about Laurie Berkner which quotes her:

"Before I played the song, I said, "This a little strange — none of your kids are here,' " Berkner said.

I haven't followed the band much, but I see that Brian (her bassist and husband?) as retired from the band.

  • Rockosaurus Rex has a new holiday song "I Have a Little Dreidel" available for download on their MySpace page.

  • Speaking of MySpace, have you gone to see how many kids' artists are represent there? I think it's pretty cool. And MySpace fixed my self-induced problem, so I'm pretty happy.

  • Did you catch Frances England on Spare the Rock today? Unfortunately, we haven't had a chance to listen yet (see above). I spot a bunch of our favorites and some new stuff, so I can't wait!
